Margaret Hamilton’s intellectual rigor, perseverance and pioneering contributions to software engineering continue to serve as a beacon of innovation and excellence.

Crocus Day 2025 is April 14 – the second Monday in April. This year, we recognize Margaret Hamilton, a distinguished software engineer whose work was instrumental in advancing space exploration and shaping the field of computing.
As the lead software engineer for NASA’s Apollo program, Hamilton played a critical role in developing the onboard flight software that enabled the successful moon landing in 1969. At a time when software engineering was still an emerging field, she not only spearheaded its development but also coined the very term “software engineering,” legitimizing the discipline and laying the foundation for modern computing practices.
Her meticulous approach to coding and commitment to reliability were pivotal in preventing potential mission failure. When an overload of data triggered an emergency alarm during the Apollo 11 lunar landing, Hamilton’s software design ensured that the system prioritized essential functions, allowing astronauts to land safely.
Beyond her contributions to NASA, in an era when women faced significant barriers in STEM fields, Hamilton’s work laid the foundation for advancements in software reliability, cybersecurity, and systems engineering.
“Never let fear get in the way! Don’t be afraid to continue even when things appear to be impossible, even when the so-called ‘experts’ say it is impossible. Don’t be afraid to stand alone, to be different, to be wrong, to make and admit mistakes, for only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly.” – Margaret Hamilton (On her advice to young girls who want to pursue a career in STEM).
This year, Crocus honors Margaret Hamilton as a trailblazer who defied conventions and reshaped the possibilities of technology. Her legacy continues to inspire future generations to harness the power of software to create a more innovative future.
