Crocus Day’s 2025 theme: Women in STEM

Updated: Apr 6

By removing barriers and empowering women and girls in STEM, we not only transform careers but also bring in diverse perspectives that drive innovation, reshape industries, and enhance society’s capacity to address future challenges.

Every April, for Crocus Day, we select a theme that aligns with our values and is timely to discuss. From this theme, we choose a prominent figure to honor during our company’s annual celebration.

In 2025, we turn our attention to ‘Women in STEM’, a topic that underscores both advancements and ongoing challenges. Despite making groundbreaking contributions to STEM –science, technology, engineering and mathematics–, women remain significantly outnumbered in these fields.

Research shows that fewer women pursue or remain in STEM careers due to stereotypes and limited access to opportunities, recognition, and leadership roles. Systemic hurdles continue to shape their professional landscapes, limiting access to mentorship, funding and career development.

According to UNESCO, women make up only 35% of STEM graduates, represent just 30% of researchers globally and even fewer hold leadership positions. Nevertheless, history is replete with women who have defied expectations to achieve exceptional accomplishments. From pioneers such as Marie Curie and Katherine Johnson to contemporary leaders shaping the scientific and technological landscape, these individuals demonstrate that brilliance, excellence and innovation are not inherent to a particular gender. Their contributions not only advance their respective fields and redefine the course of humanity, but also serve as an inspiration for future generations.

By choosing this theme, we recognize the perseverance of women in STEM. We want to encourage girls and women to choose STEM careers to create their own stories of success and innovation.
